Brief Overview of UZH's History

Before UZH was officially founded in 1833, three separate colleges for theology, law, and medicine existed in Zurich. These institutions were then merged to form UZH, along with the addition of a new faculty of arts. In its first year, 161 students were enrolled at the university. Today, with over 25,500 students, UZH stands as Switzerland's largest university. Amongst its many students and professors, UZH counts 12 Nobel Prize winners, including Albert Einstein. Over the years, the university has received many distinguished guests, with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1946 being one of the most notable.
