“A powerful voice in Europe”

Michael Schaepman, President of the University of Zurich (UZH), has been elected to the Board of Directors of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), a network of 24 leading research institutions shaping European research and education policies.

With this new role, President Schaepman is further strengthening UZH’s presence in the European research and education landscape. “LERU has a powerful voice, as it fosters dialogue between science, policymakers, and society across Europe,” Schaepman explains. As Switzerland is only partially integrated into the EU, this role offers UZH a unique opportunity to maintain and enhance its connections within the European research landscape. Through this position, Schaepman will influence policymaking, foster academic collaboration, and ensure Swiss universities continue to play a prominent role in European research and education.

Advancing Independent Research and Innovation

LERU plays a key role in shaping European education and research policy. As a board member, President Schaepman aims to deepen collaborations with partner universities and advocate for Switzerland’s full and equal participation in EU programs. “Vigorous, independent basic research is our most important common cause”, he notes. As the next EU funding framework (2028–2034) is currently being negotiated, LERU is advocating for a balanced approach to research funding, emphazising independent basic research, which is crucial for societal innovation, rather than restricting European research to applied projects with purely practical applications.

As international research cooperation grows more complex, UZH leverages key networks to navigate geopolitical tensions, uphold institutional independence, and enhance its global impact. "LERU members support each other in this challenging situation, particularly in the areas of knowledge security and safeguarding national interests” notes President Schaepman.

Beyond LERU, UZH actively engages in Una Europa and Universitas 21, connecting with leading universities across continents. These networks complement its LERU membership, fostering interdisciplinary teaching, innovation, and sustainability while strengthening UZH’s role in shaping European research policies. Schaepman’s leadership within LERU will now further positions UZH at the forefront of global academic collaboration, driving progress in an increasingly complex research landscape.
