During her inaugural visit to UZH, H.E. Aoife McGarry, Ambassador of Ireland to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, engaged in an insightful exchange with UZH President Michael Schaepman and other representatives of the university, discussing possible ways of strengthening collaboration between UZH and Irish research institutions.
Ambassador McGarry emphasized that Switzerland is one of Ireland’s most important trade partners, particularly in the life sciences. Given UZH’s strong and broad research in these fields, both the Ambassador and Michael Schaepman recognized the potential for deepening collaboration. Moreover, with both Switzerland and Ireland renowned for their strong commitment to research and innovation, they are well-positioned to collaborate on addressing global challenges in public health and sustainable development.
UZH has close ties with leading Irish institutions, particularly through its international university networks. UZH collaborates closely with the University College Dublin through Una Europa and Universitas 21 (U21), and with the Trinity College Dublin through the League of European Research Universities (LERU). These partnerships are instrumental in facilitating joint research and teaching initiatives as well as student and staff mobility.
The Swiss Centre of Irish Studies at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation, managed by UZH’s English Department and supported by the Embassy of Ireland to Switzerland, has been playing an important role in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and increasing the visibility of Irish Studies across Switzerland. The Centre is dedicated to promoting Irish culture, literature, and academic exchange. Its annual lecture series, held each fall semester, features distinguished researchers from Irish universities. Through these initiatives, the Centre not only enhances the academic connections between UZH and Irish institutions but also serves as a vital bridge in the broader cultural and diplomatic relationship between Ireland and Switzerland.
